It’s no wonder human beings love linen – we’ve been using it for literally over 30,000 years according to this Harvard study. Clearly we know what’s good 😉

Here are some of the top characteristics of this incredible fabric:

  • Linen fabric naturally resists dirt and stains
  • Unlike other fabrics, linen has no lint or pilling tendencies, and can be dry-cleaned, steamed or machine-washed. It can withstand high temperatures, and will only shrink a little bit the first time you wash it.
  • Linen fabric is hypoallergenic, making it suitable for people with skin diseases or sensitivities, and also for young children and babies.
  • Linen bedding has microscopic breaks throughout its structure so it actually has a subtle massaging effect on the skin!
  • Renowned for its breathability, linen bedding is highly air permeable and heat conducting. This means it keeps you warm in the winter and cool in hot weather, which in turn helps you sleep comfortably.
  • Incredibly, linen can absorb an insane 20% of its weight in moisture before feeling wet! This ability to keep moisture away from the body keeps your skin feeling cool and fresh all night long.
  • Linen bedding gets softer and more supple with each wash, essentially meaning it gets better with age! One set of linen bedding will very likely last you a lifetime.
  • Linen is anti-static which keeps your skin comfortable. It also helps your skin retain its natural pH balance while you sleep.
  • Linen bedding can last for decades, as it’s twice as durable as cotton. This ensures that buying linen bed linen is a great investment, since the cost per use is so low.
  • Linen is a very environmentally friendly fabric, because all the different parts of a flax plant are used. The best fibers are used to produce linen fabric, and the seeds are pressed to make linseed oil. Not only does this reduce waste, but flax also requires no irrigation, is biodegradable and is a renewable resource.

LINEN IS AWESOME!

Caring for your linen bedding

Wondering how to best care for your precious linen bedding? Here are some tips to keep your luxurious threads in tip top shape for decades to come!

  1. Use neutral or mild detergents without chlorine or peroxide
  2. Don’t pour washing detergent directly on your linen – it’s best to let the your machine fill up with water, then add the detergent, and then add your linen to the machine
  3. If you have colored / dyed linen bedding, don’t ever use bleach
  4. It’s not recommended, but you can bleach white linen bedding. Linen is strong, but some say that bleach can weaken linen’s fibers. If you are going to bleach your white linen, make sure you use oxygen-based bleach, as chlorine bleach might yellow your fabric
  5. Don’t tumble dry too long
  6. If you need to iron your linen, it’s easiest and best to do it when the fabric is still a bit damp

Frequently asked questions about linen

What is special about linen bedding?

So many characteristics make linen special and valuable!

  • it’s highly absorbent, making it perfect for both hot and cold seasons
  • it gets softer, shinier and stronger the more you wash it
  • it’s super durable
  • it looks super cozy and luxurious

What is linen most commonly used for?

Lots of things are made from linen!

Linen is mostly used nowadays to make clothing, bags, towels of every kind, napkins, bedding, tablecloths, runners, and upholstery covers.

Not only that, but it’s also used to make canvases for oil paintings and by artisan bakers when they want their dough to hold its shape during the baking process.

Why is my linen bedding scratchy?

Probably because it’s new! If the somewhat rough texture of brand new linen bothers you, just wash it a couple of times before placing it on your bed.

Cotton vs Linen – which one is best?

Although cotton and linen have some very distinct characteristics, they also share many of the same properties! They are both derived from plants and are very durable and breathable fabrics.

Linen has a much more elaborate manufacturing process than cotton, which is the main reason why linen’s price point is usually set higher than cotton’s.

So which one is better?

You can definitely find quality bedding in both linen and cotton. But overall, in my opinion linen is the preferable choice when it comes to bedding. It’s more breathable, because linen has longer and wider fibers. And it’s more durable due to its thicker fibers. Plus, linen is much more eco friendly than cotton.

  1. Great list : ) I love wearing linen but for bedding sheets I personally prefer washed cotton which I softer and more breathable. I guess it depends on the person!
