Transition your home from summer to fall with cozy vibes!

*This post has been kindly sponsored by The Home Depot and Collective Voice.

It’s almost that time of year again! The leaves are changing colors and the air is getting crisper. Fall has arrived and now it’s finally time to cozy up your home for this great season.

The transition into fall is one of my absolute favorite parts of the year. So today, I’d like to share with you all of my best and easiest tips for making your home feel warm and inviting in preparation for the chillier season!

I get a lot of questions like “how do I make my house cozy for fall?” so let’s talk about transitioning our summer decor into fall decor!

For me, transitioning my home to the cooler weather is all about making it feel like my home is giving me a warm hug when I come in!

The other question that people often ask is WHEN to decorate for fall. The answer is: whenever you feel like it. For some, Labor Day can be a great time to start decorating for autumn if you’re looking for an easy marker.

Personally, I transition into fall decor gradually, but I never start before I feel the temperatures dip a little! So for me, it’s less about an exact time or date and more about temperature and feeling. But if it feels better for you to transition on the exact last day of summer, or on August 31, or on Labor Day, or when the moon is full, do whatever you think is best!

1. Warm up your color palette in key spots in your home

The very first thing that comes to mind with fall decor is probably the color palette for most people. Nature’s palette shifts dramatically in the fall, and it can be nice to echo that change in our interiors.

The fall palette I always think of consists of earthy tones and natural elements.

If like me, you’re not a straight up pumpkin orange kinda person 🎃, you can still bring in warm tones. Think rust, terracotta, clay and tan tones, & deep charcoals and creams and warm whites for your darks and lights.

If you want to experiment with more color in your space, then try bringing in colors like deep reds and browns, plum, navy, mustard and mossy greens.

I like to make this color transition in a few key places: in my bedding, in throw pillows and throw blankets. You could also introduce warm tones into other items like towels, artwork, and curtains.

If you don’t like warm color palettes and you’re more of a cool color person, then I would focus on bringing in more materials that communicate warmth, like wood, leather, baskets, sisal – all of these materials will work with any color palette. In terms of textiles, you could use velvets, felts and heavy knits in colors that complement your space.

Some other materials you can incorporate for fall are elements like wool, stone, dried foliage and ceramics.

2. Update your bedding

For me it’s all about the bedroom, and I‘ve been busy creating the coziest bedroom for us for the upcoming cooler weather. Our cold season lasts a LONG time here, so I really wanted to create a cozy, calming, and warm atmosphere that we could relax in. We had a very clean, linear bed for a long time, and I was really craving something a touch more decorative. So I opted for this channel tufted bed by Corliving that has a slight curve to the headboard, which The Home Depot kindly sent me for the project! I love the cream upholstery and I think it works so nicely against the new cozy dark color we painted our room!

I’ve always been a huge fan of The Home Depot, but ever since we bought a house, I’ve
taken my love of The Home Depot to a whole new level. 😂 It’s always been our go-to for DIY supplies, but they also carry so, so much more beyond your typical home improvement items! Their online selection of furniture is truly amazing. Plus, their delivery options make it so easy to get the items right to our door! No more struggling trying to figure out how to cram stuff into our car!

Anyways, you don’t have to be a crazy person like me and redo your entire bedroom for the fall 🤣 You can opt to just bring in warm toned blankets, throws and quilts, and use them over your existing bedding as needed.

If you have light colored bedding and you aren’t able to swap out duvet or sheet covers, don’t worry: pillows can make all the difference to your bed in the fall. Grabbing a few warm toned pillow shams and a throw can be super impactful!

Speaking of pillows…

3. Swap out your throw pillows and throws

If you removed your throw pillows and throws for the summer season, it’s time to bring them back inside!

TIP: Throw pillows aren’t just for your bed, use them on your sofa and anywhere else around the house that needs a little cozy touch! For example I like to place them on my dining chairs! 🙂

You could get updated throw pillow shams in warm tones like rust, amber, gold, mustard, creams and terracotta tones. Make sure you get a good mix of solid colors, patterns and different textures.

With your textiles, in the fall season you’ll want to try and introduce cozy textures like velvets, heavy knits, and faux fur.

4. Extra blankets

I think it’s nice to have extra blankets that are readily available in the fall.

I keep extra blankets everywhere in the house! Other than on the bed, make sure you drape blankets over some of your chairs, over the sofa arm and in baskets in the common areas of your home where people tend to congregate and hang out, like the living room, den and family room.

If you’re still using your outdoor space in the cool fall evenings (maybe you’re lucky enough to have an outdoor firepit?), then definitely make sure you’ve got blankets readily available for those moments!

5. Swap out your curtain panels

Light, sheer curtains are great for the hot summer months, they let in all that beautiful sunshine and can really make a room feel airy.

But when it gets chilly outside and the days start getting shorter, you might want to consider swapping out your window dressings for something more substantial.

Not only will this help keep the heat in when you close them, but the thicker fabric gives off a completely different feel – much cozier and cocoon-like!

I totally realize this might not be doable as a fall decorating update in a room that has a ton of windows! But if you are only dealing with one set of curtains it’s well worth the effort!

(While you’re at it, make sure your curtains are hung properly!)

6. Bring back your rugs for the cold seasons

Some people like to remove their rugs in the hot months, so make sure you bring your rugs back out for the fall season.

If you’re tired of looking at the same old rugs every year, try experimenting putting them in different locations in your home. You can also layer rugs if you’re looking to try something new.

Rugs obviously also provide some nice extra insulation for your feet on those cold days.

I have a rug obsession, so one way I try to share that enthusiasm with others is by sharing all my favorite rug deals on Instagram. Be sure to follow me so you don’t miss out on any great deals!

7. Swap out your home fragrance

Using scent year round in my home is a non-negotiable however … I like to use different scents for different seasons!

In the summer months I prefer scents that lean more fresh, maybe floral. And then in the fall and winter I crave woodier, smokier, heavier scents.

In the fall, you might want to try using scents that are a little more gourmand (think cupcake and cookie type scents) but it’s totally up to your personal preference.

If you’re not normally a scent person, I recommend trying it out this year. It definitely adds an extra layer of coziness to the autumn atmosphere! 🍂

8. Candles

Candles are a vibe, whether you choose to use scented or not. There’s nothing like lighting a candle to make your home feel welcoming and warm.

If you’re the type of person that is a little forgetful and your head is in the clouds often, maybe use flameless battery operated candles instead … 😅

9. Bring in seasonal greenery

No matter the season, we always want to make sure we’re trying to bring natural elements into our decor.

It can be a simple as a vase with some stems in it, or an extravagant centerpiece with plenty of foliage … but definitely make sure to put some greenery in your home for fall.

For an understated yet really chic seasonal autumnal look, I recommend experimenting with things like long sculptural stems, dried flower pods, eucalyptus, and things like wheat and dried grasses.

If you already have a lot of color going on in your home, try keeping your greenery toned down or monochromatic so that things don’t get visually overwhelming.
