Why choose a blue bedroom?

Blue is considered a calming color that can help you relax and get a good night’s sleep. The calming effect that the color blue can have on your mood makes it the perfect choice for a bedroom – a place you normally go to to rest, unwind, and relax.

Blue isn’t strictly a calm color though: for example look at this almost neon electric blue bedroom! I wouldn’t say this is necessarily a soothing blue, but it’s definitely exciting!

Blue can also be energetic, fresh and lively when it’s contrasted with white or yellow (or both!).

Being such a versatile color, it’s no wonder so many people choose to decorate their bedrooms with blue! No matter what style you’re going for, there’s a blue bedroom design that will fit your needs.

Tips for bringing blue into the bedroom

If you’re looking for some inspiration on how to bring blue into your bedroom, here are some tips! There are plenty of ways to incorporate blue into your bedroom design.

Of course you can paint the walls blue. But even if your walls are painted a color other than blue, you can still add blue accents to your rooms.

Things like artwork, rugs, pillows, bedding and curtains can be introduced in the color blue. You can even use blue furniture!

In fact, introducing wood that is painted blue, or blue upholstered pieces are great ways to bring blue furniture into your bedroom without having to paint the actual walls.

But if you are using paint, consider painting your trim and walls the same color. This will create a uniform, blue cocoon-like feeling that is both cozy and calming.

✅ TIP: I suggest choosing a different paint sheen for your trim. For example: eggshell on the walls and gloss on the trim, as seen on the green walls below.

If you want to add a touch of luxury, paint your bedroom walls in a deep blue and then add a velvet headboard in a coordinating color:

Use an inky blue, almost black, to create an accent wall, like in the photo below. Pair it with warm neutral upholstery, wood accents and clean lines to create a contemporary look.

Using cream, white or light colored accents with such a dark wall will help to keep the room from feeling too dark and oppressive and will create a very striking contrast.

(Actually … now that I look at this picture, this wall just looks black to me. But hopefully you get the idea!) 🤣

Choose a more muted, grayed out blue for a super sophisticated look:

Beachy blue bedrooms

If you’re drawn to the nautical theme and you want to create a beachy vibe in your bedroom, try using light blues and whites. This works well for lake house properties as well.

Add to the look by incorporating neutral woven textiles and some subtle nautical stripes.

You can try bringing the outdoors in by adding a potted palm tree to the corner of the room.

Just be sure to steer clear from anything overly themed – think things like oars, anchors, seashells and starfish – as they can feel cheesy.

Instead, think about other ways to pull in the sea/ocean/water theme that are less literal.

You could opt for a beautiful painting of a boat on a stormy ocean. Or a painting depicting a sailboat peacefully drifting along the water. Bring in a basket wrapped in jute, or maybe even style in a beautiful piece of driftwood.

The photo above is an example of the coastal theme done right!! I know it’s not a bedroom, but you could easily use this palette in your bedroom. You could swap out the checks for stripes and obviously the photo is styled for the fall season, but the overall color scheme is lovely, coastal and classic yet fresh.

To achieve the seaside resort look in your bedroom, you don’t have to paint the walls blue. You can paint the walls a bright, fresh white, like in the picture above, and incorporate your blue tones through smaller accents like pillows and bedding.

More Nautical blue bedroom ideas:

  • Light blue walls and ceilings with white or light wood furniture
  • Blue and white striped bedding and/or curtains
  • Dark blue walls with light wood furniture and white accents
  • White walls with blue bedding and wood furniture

Darker tones are perfect for creating a cozy and relaxing space.

If you want to create a blue bedroom that is more of a cozy, snug environment, then consider using a darker blue shade.

Deep blues can be used on the walls, furniture, bedding or other accessories. I would stay away from installing a blue carpet, but you could try a blue area rug.

Light blue bedrooms

If you’re looking for a way to add blue to your bedroom, but you’re not in love with the darker blues, then of course there are always light blue shades.

Light blue is perfect for creating an airy and refreshing feel in the bedroom.

Light blue looks great paired with whites, creams and ivories. Medium and light wood tones work nicely with light blue color schemes.

Monochromatic Blue Bedrooms

If blue has always been and will forever be your favorite color and you just can’t get enough of it, then why not go fully monochromatic in your bedroom?

Embrace the blues and paint the walls, trim, and ceiling. Then, go even further and add blue bedding and blue decor.

You can try to pull in the exact same shade in multiple areas, or you can use multiple blue shades.

Recommended blue palettes

If you’re not sure how to pair blues with other colors, here are a few recommended blue bedroom color palettes to get you started!

Glamorous blue bedroom Palettes

Try dark sapphire blue walls with gold accents and pink, teal and gold velvet textiles, like in the photo below.

I wouldn’t exactly say the blue is the main focus of the room here, but it provides the perfect rich backdrop for the sumptuous velvets in the room.

Personally I think I would have taken the blue to the ceiling in this room, to make an even bigger statement!

Next we have blue walls, a tufted blue velvet headboard, gold lighting fixtures, and velvet bedding mainly in teal. Add a fiddle leaf fig for some liveliness.

I would say this room is leaning boho-glam!

(By the way, the fiddle leaf fig in the pic above looks faux to me – here are some of my favorite faux fiddle leaf figs!)

Traditional blue bedroom ideas:

If you’re going for a traditional blue bedroom look, then it’s going to be very dependent on the furniture you bring in. Millwork will help bring this look home. The patterns you choose to incorporate will also affect the outcome of this look.

Be sure to check out my post on how to decorate traditional (but not stuffy!), for more tips on how to get that timeless look in your home.

There is a toile party happening in the traditional blue and white bedroom below and we are all invited – the bedroom has wallpaper with a blue toile pattern, and at least 2 upholstered pieces in the room also feature blue and white toile.

Notice now the blue and white motif makes the rich tones of the antique wood furniture pop like crazy.

The natural woven area rug, paired with the crisp, contemporary white bedding manage to give the room a more up to date vibe in an otherwise very daring, but still very traditional room.

✅ tip: Anything wood or leather will pretty much always look great with blue – this is because wood tones are similar to blue’s complementary color, orange.

Minimalist blue bedroom Ideas

If you tend to embrace the less is more mantra, then you may enjoy a blue bedroom that leans more minimalist.

You may want to stay away from using a lot of color, and keep your room’s palette minimal with white walls and matching white trim. Perhaps you can bring in subtle hits of blue through the bedding and textiles.

The room below introduces the same tone of blue into three major elements in the room: the wood slat wall, the arm chair with matching ottoman and the blue curtains.

There seems to be a hint of a slightly greener tone of blue in the rug as well; although most of the rug is covered by the bed, it still helps to anchor the rest of the room to the blue in the left hand corner. Finally, the eye gets one more hit of blue with the pale blue vase resting on the headboard on the right.
