This year for the Christmas holiday season, I really wanted my house to smell amazing on demand.
If I’m not doing any baking (let’s be real, I’m probably not!), I at least want it to smell like I am 😉
Also, I have an artificial Christmas tree, so some pine-scented candles were a must!
I decided to order a bunch of the scented Christmas candles that Bath & Body Works makes every year for the holidays.
These candles come and go online in terms of stock – if you’re having a hard time finding them on the Bath & Body Works website, you can try Amazon, or go into a Bath & Body Works store in person to buy them.
Overall, all 8 of these candles were of excellent quality in terms of the burn and throw. I had zero wick issues, no tunneling and no soot. Very happy with the burn quality! Some had stronger scents than others, but overall these are really high-quality candles in terms of the strength and throw of the scent. Some of these candles were so strongly scented that I could smell them out in the hallway before entering my apartment! Yes that is STRONG, but that is also what you are paying for, so in my opinion, that’s a good thing!
Here are my reviews of the 8 different 3 wick candles I got my hands on this year.
Marshmallow Fireside
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: toasted Marshmallow, Smoldering Woods, Fire Roasted Vanilla, Crystallized Amber.
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: On cold, this smells very similar to the other Marshmallow Fireside candle (reviewed below), sweet with just a hint of smokiness.
When I burned Marshmallow Fireside, sadly I did not get any amber notes. Maybe the more trained noses are able to pick up on the amber, but I didn’t! I did get strong campfire notes, with a lot of delicious gooey marshmallow blended with sweet sugary vanilla. Normally I am a bit afraid of home fragrances that contain vanilla, as sometimes they can be sickeningly synthetic smelling. Not so with this candle! The vanilla is not cloying at all, it’s really pleasant and just makes me want to eat cookies and desert all day!
After blowing out the candle, the smoky campfire scent lingers for a little while – I like that because in the winter it’s cozy. It reminds me of wood logs burning in the fireplace. If you are someone that does not like sweet, smokey scents, I would steer clear of this one.
I know some people like to burn this candle year-round, but personally, I would classify this as a winter scent.
Throw: 8/10. The throw on this version of Marshmallow Fireside is really great. At first I was afraid the throw wasn’t very good, because it did start off a bit faint. After letting the candle burn for a couple of hours, it easily filled my whole office with its beautiful scent. It doesn’t fill the whole house by any stretch, if that’s what you’re looking for. I’d say the throw is about a 8/10. Strong, but not so overpowering that you need to blow it out.
Burn Quality: Excellent. This 3 wick candle burns clean and evenly with no wick issues whatsoever. The wicks could have used trimming after burning but I didn’t bother, so a few bits of burnt wick fell into the wax. Tall flames with nice deep and even wax pools.
Verdict: Yes! ✅ Would definitely repurchase.
Marshmallow Fireside (2018 container)
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Made with Cedar wood & Palo Santo Essential Oils with notes of Toasted Marshmallow & Vanilla
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: On cold, in terms of the marshmallow and sweetness note, this is very similar to the Marshmallow Fireside candle reviewed above. The difference is that there is a faint hint of a cedar wood note, and there is next to no smokiness.
The cedar wood note is there albeit faint, and the sweetness of the toasted marshmallows and vanilla is also there.
Throw: 6/10. Incredibly weak the first 2 or 3 times I burned this. The 4th time I burned this candle, the throw improved after a couple of hours and filled the room.
Burn Quality: Excellent. No issues with the wicks. Nice high flames and a deep, even pool of wax.
Verdict: Nope. ❌ Would not repurchase – I would purchase the other Marshmallow campfire candle instead, as you get more bang for your buck in terms of throw and scent.
Hot Cocoa & Cream
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Made with Nutmeg & Sandalwood Essential Oils with notes of Milk Chocolate & Steamed Milk
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: On cold, this is pure milk chocolate, and it smells incredible. Not synthetic, just pure chocolately goodness that makes me want to make hot cocoa or eat chocolate pudding. Or chocolate cake. Or anything made with milk chocolate…. IT’S SO GOOD!
The sandalwood and nutmeg notes are not there for me, I wish they were because it sounds like they would smell amazing paired with this candle. But nope, not there.
Throw: 10/10. Amazing throw, fills the whole house (I live in a 2 bedroom apartment). I had Hot Cocoa & Cream burning in the living room and could smell it when I came in the front door and throughout the house.
Burn Quality: Excellent. Flames weren’t super high on this candle but the wicks burned nicely and the wax was a nice deep, even pool.
Verdict: Yes! ✅ Would absolutely repurchase, this was probably my favorite of all 8 candles that I purchased this year.
Holiday
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Made with Nutmeg and Clove Essential Oils. With notes of Cinnamon and Cardamom.
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: If you like cinnamon scents, then you will love this! I didn’t particularly care for it. I did get some of the clove, but none of the nutmeg or cardmom. It’s essentially a spiced candle leaning heavily towards cinnamon. Loved the festive packaging and labels on these!
Throw: 8/10. Starts off faint. After an hour or so, the candle fills the room with its spiced cinnamon scent.
Burn Quality: Excellent. The wicks burned nicely and the wax forms a nice deep, even pool.
Verdict: No ❌, would not repurchase, but only because I am not a fan of cinnamon scented products. This (along with First Frost) was my least favorite of the candles I purchased this year.
Winter
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Made with Fir Needle and Orange Essential Oils with notes of Clove and Citrus.
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: This was one of my favorites to burn right at Christmas time. I love the strong scent of fir with a hint of clove. I didn’t actually pick up on any of the citrus notes though, but honestly, did not miss them either.
Throw: 8/10. Great throw on this, the main scent that fills the room is the fir note.
Burn Quality: Excellent. The wicks burned nicely and the wax forms a nice deep, even pool.
Verdict: Yes ✅, would repurchase. It’s a great Christmassy smell!
Yuletide
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Made with Rosemary and Pine Essential Oils with notes of Eucalyptus and Cedar.
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: This was another one of my favorites to burn right at Christmas time. The main notes I picked up on with this one were the pine and the cedar, and there is nothing more christmassy than pine!
First Frost
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Made with Lavandin and Patchouli Essential Oils with notes of Bergamot and Sandalwood.
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
Impressions: This was such a huge disappointment, especially based on how nice the notes seemed. I think there is far too much of something (the patchouli maybe?) and it’s incredibly over powering, so much so that I felt like I could actually taste it in my mouth after burning it for acouple of hours.
When my husband came home from work, he asked me to put it out because he said it was “stinking up” the whole common area and hallway outside our apartment of spray-on deodorant. I haven’t reburned it since then.
It’s possible that if the notes were re-balanced in this candle, it might be passable, but currently it just smells waaaay too much like synthetic spray-on Axe/Lynx deodorant and I cannot stand it. 🤢
There is ZERO “Christmas” about this scent and I’m not sure what Bath & Body Works were thinking when they decided to market this as a Christmas scent. Yuck.
Throw: 11/10. ENORMOUS throw on this, sadly though, it just smells like I sprayed Axe/Lynx deodorant all over my house.
Burn Quality: Excellent. The wicks burned nicely and the wax forms a nice deep, even pool.
Verdict: NO! ❌❌❌, would not repurchase. Unless you are a fan of Axe/Lynx spray-on deodorant, I would 100% pass on this, it’s horrible.
Magic in the air
Bath & Body Works official fragrance notes: Almond Flower, White Iris and Whipped Vanilla Bourbon.
Burn time: 25/45 hours.
*note – I actually received this as a gift and I think it’s actually a couple of years old because I know these candles were released in 2016. I am unsure as to whether or not Bath & Body Works still produces this scent in candle form.
Impressions: When this candle is burning, it becomes a mix of a lot of different things and I actually feel like it’s a bit too much. It started to just smell really synthetic after burning it for a couple of hours. As a reviewer on Fragrantica put it, “Magic in the Air smells like someone with freshly shampooed hair eating a waffle cone filled with salted caramel ice cream.“
Mind you this was a review on the perfume from the same line, and not on the candle, but I would tend to agree with this description. While it may sound wonderful, I personally think this scent is a bit too “busy”.
Throw: 9/10. Great throw on this. Filled the room after about an hour on the first burn.
Burn Quality: Excellent. The wicks burned nicely and the wax forms a nice deep, even pool.
Verdict. No ❌, would not repurchase as I feel like there is a bit too much going on with all the notes, which makes it smell a bit synthetic.
When I finish all the candles, I plan on keeping the lids to use them as Christmas coasters in the future! What do you like to do with your used up candles containers?
