While it’s not super fun to think about the end of the holiday season, taking down the trimmings is a reality that sadly, we must face every year.😓

Am I guilty of keeping my Christmas decorations out for much longer than I care to admit? Yes, yes, I am.

This is partially because I just can’t be bothered to pack everything away. The thought of dismantling it all and cramming everything back into the original boxes stresses me out!

But there are ways to make taking down and storing your Christmas decorations a little easier.

How To Store Your Christmas Decorations – 6 Clever Tips!

It really comes down to organization and making sure you have a place for everything.

Below is a list of the most common Christmas decorations that need storing for 11 out of 12 months of the year, and ideas on how you can deal with it! There are a few handy DIY Christmas storage hacks included as well, that will save you money!

1. How to Store Artificial Christmas Trees

One of the most important (and largest) Christmas decor items that will need storage are faux Christmas trees.

I have been storing my faux Christmas tree in its original cardboard box for almost 10 years.

I never really gave it much thought and it seemed like a good idea at the time!

But now when I look at that box, it makes me cringe a bit.

It’s tearing, it’s hard to move, it doesn’t stay closed, it falls over. It’s a sad cardboard box and it’s time to get rid of it.

What’s worse is that cardboard boxes can get moldy and musty. This can happen if for example your store your Christmas tree in the garage and you live somewhere where there is a lot of humidity.

A much better option for storing your artificial Christmas tree is to use a storage bag. Even if you swap out your current tree, you will most likely be able to reuse the bag for the next tree you get (unless they differ in size by a lot).

A bag will also keep your tree dust and insect-free.

So no more worrying about how many spiders decided to move into your faux douglas fir while he was living in the attic for 11 months! 😅

There are several types and sizes of Christmas tree storage bags that you can get depending on your needs.

Typically, Christmas ornaments all get chucked into a bag or a box and are forgotten about until the next year.

And when you pull them out a year later, you silently curse at yourself for not having done a better job.

The ornaments are tangled, jumbled in a huge knot, there are broken baubles, the strings have come off half of them and it’s just a huge mess. AHH!

So a better solution is to get some containers for storing your Christmas ornaments, where each ornament fits neatly into a little pocket of its own.

Seriously, a game-changer when it comes to organizing your Christmas decor!

These fabulously organized containers would work great if you are wanting to store your fragile ornaments safely in a closet or in the garage.

Remember to pack the delicate ornaments in bubble wrap if you are concerned about breakage.

4. How to Store Christmas Lights

Lights are probably the Christmas decorations that stress me out the most to put away. Christmas lights need to be handled and packed away with care so that they can be reused year after year.

If you find a safe way to store both your indoor and outdoor Christmas lights, you won’t have to deal with replacing bulbs, or worse, the whole light string next year.

So how do you safely store your Christmas lights? The best way is to use reels!

Metal reels that you wind your lights around will ensure that all your lights remain tangle-free and easy to hang the next time you need them.

BONUS: you can also store your garlands with this method!

6. Storing Christmas Candles

storing christmas candles

I am obsessed with home fragrance so I always stock up on Christmassy scented candles for the holidays.

Since I have a faux tree, I don’t get to enjoy the lovely fresh pine smell that you would get from a real tree. So I love having wintery pine-scented candles and wax melts burning throughout the season.

I don’t always manage to burn all my candles, so I like to pack them up and store them for next year.

It’s easy to store away your Christmas candles but you have to make sure of a couple of key things:

  1. Wrap your candles in cellophane to keep them from melting together or transferring color if they become warm.
  2.  Don’t wrap your candles in plastic wrap or waxed paper as these materials might melt onto the candles if they get too warm.
  3.  Store in a cool temperature to preserve color and scent (but don’t freeze them).

Pillar candles inside containers, jar candles, and votives can be stacked, but taper candles and pillar candles that aren’t protected should be stored flat to prevent warping and damage to the wax.

After you’ve taken these steps, just wrap the more fragile candles (like the ones in glass jars and containers) in newspaper or bubble wrap, place in a box or storage bin and label the outside so you don’t forget what’s inside. Done!

I hope these storage ideas made organizing your Christmas decorations a little easier this year!
